The Research Center is one of a total of 18 research centers of the Association in Germany and is one of the largest research centers in Europe. Around 6,500 people are currently employed.

For more than 20 years, the object security has been using the "Identa" software to create ID cards for access to the site. The system was successively expanded and, in addition to the ID cards for employees, also includes ID cards for employees of companies based on the campus as well as for guests, visitors and external companies. Due to organizational changes, extensions to the system and the confirmed end of maintenance for the existing Identa software, the replacement of the system is now urgently required.
